Hair Test Porosity: The method that will guide you to the proper care of your hair
And the way to get healthy hair is simpler than you think!
Do you wonder why your hair look diferrent from anyone else? The questions about their care are everyday on topic, cause social media platforms promote thousands of tips and “how-to” videos for healthy and shinny hair.
Regardless of the general characteristics, a basic factor that forms the final styling of your hair is their porosity level. This one is affected so by the care routine as by the chemical treatments in which they have been exposed.
“Hair Porosity”
It is determined by the hair cuticle structure, meaning the external layer of each hair shaft, which which consists of overlapping scales. Porosity is the hair's ability to absorb and hold the moisture and affect how easily this one can contribute to hair.
There are three main categories of hair porosity: low, normal (medium) and high.
Low Porosity
Low porosity hair can present a lot of challenges when it comes to hydration, as the cuticle is tightly packed, making it difficult to absorb moisture. They are characterized by the slow dry, the resilience to chemical processes and the tendency to build up products while looking dull.
To deal these challenges, prefer light products and avoid their extremely amount of use. Also, the use of lukewarm (not too hot) water could help to open the hair's cuticle, make it easier to remove the residues and ensuring the optimal cleanliness.
Normal (Medium) Porosity
This specific occasion demands less maintenance compairing to any other type. The moisture enters to hair's cuticle and is kept constant, make the hair durable to dyes, styling and chemical treatments. Therefore, the exremely use of these treatments could inrease the levels of porosity.
The choice of products with balanced hydration levels and the use of lukeworm water during the washing can involve to maintance of a healthy appearance.
High Porosity
The more easily moisture in high porosity hair penetrates the hair shaft, the faster it can be removed, leaving hair dry and prone to frizz and damage.
Their main characteristics are that water is absorbed directly by the hair upon contact, the hair dries quickly, light products do not provide enough hydration, they "accept" the color directly, even semi-permanent dyes, while at the same time the frizz is intense , and hair tangles easily.
How will you identify which of the above 3 you belong to?
Even at home you have the chance with simple methods to check your hair porosity and to know later which care you will follow. There are two valid ways, with the most well-known to be the “float test”, but the “spray test” too.
Α) Float test
By determining how quickly a clean strand of hair sinks in water at room temperature, you can get a sense of your percentage.
Specifically, the steps to complete the process are:
1. Take some of your hair, prefering those which fell down on the pillow or from your brush.
2. Fill a glass of water.
3. Throw them to water.
4. Notice what happens over the next few minutes.
Results:
Low porosity: The hair will float to the surface for a while because the hair cuticle is tightly compressed, making it harder for water to penetrate.
Normal porosity: The hair will float for a while before gradually sinking.
High porosity: The hair sinks quickly, indicating that the hair cuticle is more open and allows moisture to be absorbed more quickly.
Β) Spray test
A relatively easy way, which reveals how the hair reacts to moisture absorption.
How to do it:
1. Wet a section of your hair with a spray bottle full of water.
2. Observe how your hair reacts to contact with water.
Results:
Low porosity: Water will stay on the surface of the hair and form droplets that are difficult to absorb.
Medium porosity: Water will be absorbed relatively quickly but in moderation, without being retained on the surface of the hair or penetrating it too quickly.
High porosity: Water will be absorbed almost immediately and the hair will get wet quickly.
