End of summer: The care of hair that has been exposed to chlorine and salt
The beginning of autumn is an ideal time to say goodbye to dull, dry hair and spend time caring for it.
The damage suffered by the hair during the summer needs to be repaired in order to get one step closer to restoring its shiny appearance. Chlorine, salty sea water, combined with heat tools and styling, make them brittle, with severe signs of dehydration and breakage.
According to Halley Brisker, (well-known British red carpet-ready looks hairstylist.)
"after summer is the ideal time to think about applying treatments and products to rebuild and moisturize your hair, as it can feel dry, dull and damaged."
How does chlorine affect hair quality?
Chlorine is a chemical disinfectant added to swimming pools to kill germs.
Chlorinated water has been shown to dissolve the oils that coat and protect hair, which can make hair prone to damage and dryness.
Chlorine also breaks down hair proteins, increasing the risk of hair breakage. People with white or blonde hair are more at risk because the hair has less melanin to protect it.
Therefore, swimming in the pool exposes the hair to chlorine and causes dryness. This is also why you may notice that hair is more brittle and prone to breakage, even after a shower, leaving the scalp feeling flaky, irritated and dehydrated.
Especially those of you with fine, dyed, light or even keratin treated hair will experience more wear and tear, with blondes discoloring and showing a green tint due to oxidized copper.
The effects of sea water
As refreshing as a dip in the ocean feels, improper care before and after swimming can lead to unwanted effects on hair.
Salt water dehydrates the hair and scalp, making it brittle and dry. This can lead to further problems such as damaged lengths and ends, as the seawater will make the cuticle of the hair vulnerable. But that's not all. Salt water can also affect hair color, as natural salt water weakens the hair structure and can remove artificial color. It can also interfere with other chemical processes, such as a keratin treatment.
How can you protect hair?
Irrespective of the steps you can take before exposure to the sun, sea and chlorine, such as using oils, tying your hair or using swimming caps, the most important thing is that you pay the necessary attention to the part of care that follows after.
Rinse well
After swimming, it is recommended not to let the hair dry with chlorine and salt residues. You can rinse them with running water or get some spray, combing them gently.
Take time to wash yourself, performing at least 2 washes with a suitable shampoo. Invest in products that contain ingredients that soften and balance pH, effectively removing debris.
Proper hair care
After washing, it is important to keep the hair moist and detangle. To do this, you need to use a good conditioner with lots of fatty alcohols, oils and silicones.
Use a mask as a treatment
To avoid the possible redness that may occur, choose a light mask to soothe a dry scalp. Focus not only on the roots of the hair but also on the lengths and ends and once the five minutes are up, you should rinse thoroughly and repeat this process weekly.
Extra steps to enjoy your hair healthy & shiny again!
#1: Hairsalon
The first move you should make is to schedule an appointment with your hairdresser who will assess the general condition of the hair and advise you accordingly. He will also judge whether and how long your hair needs a cut, so you can say goodbye to the split ends and rejuvenate it with the right treatment to regain elasticity, movement and volume.
#2: Take a break from hot styling
While heat protectants are great at minimizing some of the damage associated with tools, the best thing you can do for hair is give it a break.
#3: Start hydration
We recommend adding hydration-enhancing formulas to your post-summer routine. Try an oil, serum or even a hair cream to restore the Ph of the scalp and moisturize it. This will give your hair shine, frizz control and heat protection.
